The indictment comes after she left her wallet on the seat after a United Airlines Flight into Washington DC’s Dulles Airport in January last year, and two bags of cocaine were discovered inside.
“Rose steadfastly maintains her innocence,” Jose Baez, McGowan’s attorney, said today in a statement, “These charges would never have been brought if it weren’t for her activism as a voice for women everywhere. I assure you, this selective prosecution will be met with a strong defence.”
Baez is, of course, referencing McGowan’s role in the #MeToo movement as one of its loudest and most controversial voices, and one of the many women who levelled accusations of rape and assault at Harvey Weinstein. It is unclear at the moment, of course, if Baez believes the charges to be untrue, or if his defence is that they wouldn’t have been brought if McGowan had held silent. Rose McGowan has called the charges “horseshit”.
The indictment carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. A trial date will be set on Tuesday.
