Indie darling and academy award-nominated actor Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea, Lady Bird) is in talks to play a name-swapped version of troubled actor Shia LaBeouf in forthcoming biopic Honey Boy.
The film follows the life of ‘Otis Lort’, and charts the troubled relationship Otis has with his father. A rapidly-rising name on TV, 12-year-old Otis’s father James is an ex-con and a recovering drug addict who dominates his life. 10 years later, Otis has become a mirror-image of his father, virtually unemployable as an actor he is diagnosed with childhood PTSD – right before the formally-estranged James enters the picture once more.
Taking its title from LaBeouf’s father’s cruel childhood nickname for him, Hedges is in the running to play 22-year-old Otis. An open casting call has been put out, seeking a 12-year-old Otis, whilst 31-year-old Shia LaBeouf will play James in at least the first half of the picture.
Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach) will direct, and shooting for Honey Boy is expected to start in May. No release date has been set.
