James Marsden Nabs Sonic the Hedgehog Lead From Under Paul Rudd

The X-Men Trilogy’s James Marsden has scored the lead role in the forthcoming live-action/animation hybrid adaptation of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog video games.

Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd was previously rumoured to be the front-runner for the role, but whether he passed on the flick or simply wasn’t chosen remains to be seen.

Jeff Fowler (Gopher Broke) is on board to direct Paramount Pictures’ adaptation. The Sonic franchise has been one of the largest names in the videogame industry for over twenty years, with over 360 million copies sold. This will mark the character’s first leading role on the big screen, after a cameo in Pixar’s Wreck-It Ralph.

The games follow the titular Sonic, a super-fast bipedal hedgehog who – along with his other animal friends – fights to save the creatures of his world from an evil mad scientist obsessed with robotic engines of doom.

Marsden can currently be seen in the second season of HBO’s Westworld. Sonic the Hedgehog is eyeing a 15th of November, 2019 release date.
