Tyler Perry has reportedly joined the cast of Adam McKay’s forthcoming Dick Cheney biopic, with the comic performer set to play Secretary of State Colin Powell.
The untitled project stars Christian Bale as Cheney, the former Haliburton chairman who went on to become the most influential Vice President in history under George W. Bush – to be played by Sam Rockwell. Steve Carell also stars as Donald Rumsfeld, with Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, and Bill Pullman cast in an as-yet undisclosed role.
Perry’s casting marks one of a recent spate of less comedic roles for the performer, following well-received turns in the critically-lauded Gone Girl and the less well-reviewed Alex Cross. Powell served as a four-star general before joining the Bush administration, and was instrumental in the 2003 Iraq Invasion.
McKay will also produce, alongside Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Kevin Messick, and Jeremy Kleiner.
