Jet Li, Gong Li Join Disney’s Live-Action Mulan

Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of their 1998 animated classic Mulan has bagged two of the most high-profile names in Chinese cinema, with martial artist Jet Li and award-winner Gong Li.

Jet Li, one of the East’s most enduring crossover stars of the big screen, became a household name after turns in Lethal Weapon 4, The One, and the Expendables series. He’s set to portray the wise emperor of China, who sets the plot in motion by conscripting one male from each household to fight in the army to save the kingdom from a grave threat from beyond the borders, and forces Liu Yifei’s Mulan to disguise herself as a male cadet in order to spare her elderly father’s life.

Gong Li, no relation, has been referred to as the ‘Meryl Streep of China’ by director Michael Mann, and was the first Chinese actress ever to appear on the cover of TIME Magazine. Known for her roles in Memoirs of a Geisha and Farewell My Concubine, she’s set to play the villain of the film – who, in a departure from the animation, is set to be an evil witch.

Also announced to be joining the cast is Xana Tang (Filthy Rich) who will play another new character, as Mulan’s sister. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Donnie Yen recently joined the cast, and has now been confirmed to be playing Commander Tung, a military mentor to Mulan.

Niki Caro is set to direct the film, which is due for release on the 27th of March, 2020. Shooting is set to take place in August, across China and New Zealand.
